A (SAP) substance abuse professional is a mental health practitioner who has been specially trained to evaluate for substance abuse and to coordinate treatment services for the client when needed. An (SAP) substance abuse professional does not provide substance abuse treatment; instead, meets with an individual to help a third party, often an employer, identify substance abuse and to recommend follow-up treatment(s). A Substance abuse professional may be utilized by various agencies, including private companies, and governmental entities to help identify individuals with substance abuse problems.These services can be utiized in the following settings:
- Department of Transportation
- Child Protective Services
- Court System
- Non-Profit Agencies
- Private Corporations
As a (SAP) substance abuse professional a face-to-face evaluation will be conducted which includes some required standardized testing, and making a recommendation. (DOT) Department of Transportation requires a recommendation for treatment and/or education in every case. Services willl include contact with the treatment or education provider for the duration of the program, and upon completion, the employee must return for a follow-up assessment. Documentation of completion will then be sent to the employer or designated employer representative.
